Gentle Exams with Vulvoscopy

Trauma-informed exams, magnified vulvar screening and a hand mirror

Gentle Exams with Vulvoscopy

Exams done slowly, with consent at every step. Vulvoscopy uses a magnifying scope to screen the vulva, so we can rule out, assess and track skin conditions like lichen sclerosus. You can watch on the screen as we look, and at most exams we offer a hand mirror and walk you through your own anatomy.

What is vulvoscopy?

A colposcope is usually used to check the cervix. We use it to look closely at the vulva instead. Under magnification we can see changes in the skin that are easy to miss with the naked eye, which helps us rule out or diagnose conditions like lichen sclerosus, lichen planus and other causes of itching, burning or pain.

You can watch

The image shows up on a screen in the room, so you can see exactly what we see. Many women have never seen their vulva this clearly. We can also save images and compare them visit to visit, so changes are tracked over time instead of guessed at.

A mirror and a map

At most exams we offer a regular hand mirror and walk you through your anatomy: the clitoris, labia, urethra, vaginal opening and perineum. Knowing your own body makes symptoms easier to describe and changes easier to notice.

At your pace

Nothing happens without your consent. We explain each step before we do it, you can pause or stop at any time, and many first visits are conversation only. If pap tests have been painful for you, ask about alternative screening options.
